Orissa Judicial Service Examination | Syllabus, Eligibility, Pattern, and Application

Orissa Judicial Service Examination is conducted by the Orissa Judicial Service Commission (OJS OPSC) for Civil Judge Junior Division candidates every year.

Eligibility

Educational Qualifications: The applicant must have earned a law degree (graduation) from one of India’s recognized law schools.

Candidates who are assistant law officers, superintendents, or translators in the government’s legal department, or civil/criminal court subordinates to the High Court, or ministerial officers in the High Court, are also eligible to apply if they meet certain requirements.

Candidates must be:

  1.  As of the notification date, the candidate must be less than or equivalent to 39 years old.
  2. Hold a graduate degree in law from a reputable law school.
  3.  He/she has served for at least seven years in the Law Department, or any criminal or civil court subordinate to the High Court or the High Court, as specified by the Orissa Civil Service (Pension) Rules, 1992, on the last date of submitting the application online.
  4.  Has a recommendation from the respective authorities of appointment.

Age Limit for OPSC Recruitment for Civil Judge

According to the notification’s date, the lower and upper age limits are 23 and 35, respectively. Candidates for departmental positions must be at least 39 years old. The maximum age limit for Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, women, and SEBC candidates has been extended by five years. The upper age limit for disabled candidates has been reduced by ten years. The birth date provided in the high school or equivalent certificate will be accepted.

Other Necessary Qualifications

Candidates must be citizens of India. Aspirants must be able to read, speak, and write Odia fluently, as well as pass an Odia language exam equivalent to a Middle English school standard by the deadline for submitting the application form online. Candidates must be of good moral character and free of organic and physical defects. He or she should also be in good health. Government workers, both temporary and permanent, are entitled to take the exam if they meet the age requirements and have a “No Objection Certificate” from the appointing authority. Candidates of more than one living spouse are not entitled to obtain an appointment letter until the case has been disqualified by the state government for any reason.

Orissa Judicial Service Examination Pattern & Syllabus

The OJS OPSC Exam is conducted in three parts – the preliminary examination, the main examination, and the viva voce.

1. Preliminary Examination

There is only one paper in the preliminary test, with a total score of 100. The question paper is in an analytical format. In the paper, there are 100 multiple-choice questions. Each question receives a one-point score. The exam will take one and a half hours to complete. Negative marking is 0.25 per cent of the total score assigned per question for each incorrect answer.

There are ten subjects included in the preliminary examination. Applicants who score at least 40% on the preliminary examination advance to the main examination. Candidates from the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes, on the other hand, are given some leeway. These candidates must receive at least 35%.

2. Main Exam

Three optional papers and two obligatory papers make up the main examination. The compulsory papers will take two and a half hours to complete. The responses must be written entirely in English. The query paper’s format is arbitrary. The exam has a cumulative score of 750 points. Candidates who are selected for the viva voce round must score a minimum of 33 on each of the key examination papers. He or she must also receive at least 45 per cent of the total ranking.

Paper-I General English

  • Translation and Retranslation of ten lines each
  • A short essay of about 150 words
  • Precis Writing consisting of 300 words
  • One passage of about 500 words with 5 questions

Paper-II Procedural Laws

  • The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973
  • The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908
  • The Indian Evidence Act, 1872

Paper-III Optional Paper

The candidates can pick any 3 subjects from the subjects given. Each subject carries 150 marks and must be attempted within a duration of 3 hours.

  2. Personal Laws
  3. Property Laws
  4. Law of Contract
  5. Jurisprudence and Constitution of India

3. Viva-Voce/Interview 

The candidates must qualify for both the Preliminary Exam and the Mains Exam to qualify for the Interview Round. The interview is worth 100 points. Candidates must earn at least 40% of the total score in the interview to make it to the final result list. The questions will be focused on current events around the world, the syllabus, and a shared interest in science and the arts.
